Artistic Job Fair

Approximate Time Needed:

One week project

Lesson Summary:

Students will express the characteristics of a selected career with an artistic medium (e.g. collage, mosaic, sketch, painting, mobile, etc) to create an "Artistic Job Fair" gallery.

Lesson Objective:

Students will have the opportunity to express their impression and view of careers in a creative and original fashion.

Materials and Resources:
  1. Appropriate art supplies
  2. ECOS Career List
  3. ECOS Career Directory

Helpful Hints:

The teacher or the students can select the careers for the project. The students may be challenged more if the teacher chooses the careers for them.

Activities:

  1. Explain to students that the intention of the project is to create an alternative form of the standard job fair for the student body to view. Their interpretations are limited only by their imagination. The selected career may be expressed in anyway they feel articulates their view of the essential elements or characteristics of the career.
  2. Students select the career for their project from the ECOS Career List and research the career on the Career Directory.
  3. Give students a deadline for researching the career. Artwork should not begin until student submits notes or basic outline.
  4. Dedicate classtime to the creation of work.
  5. Announce the showing to the school community.

Evaluation:

The research notes and final product.

Possible Adaptations:

Coincide the project with a school-sponsored job fair, college fair, or art show. The more publicity given to the students and their work will increase the significance of the project to the students. Market the project as the "alternative" or "abstract" job fair.
