Making Your College List

Approximate Time Needed:

30-45 minutes

Lesson Summary:

The College Search and College Directory provide students with the ability to create a list of schools that match their personal interests and selected majors in hopes of continuing the college and/or career exploration process.

Lesson Objective:

Students will generate a list of 8-10 schools that match their interests and desired majors.

Materials and Resources:

  1. Pre-requisite: Students must complete the Student Profile, the Major module, and the Career module.
  2. Exercises tool for helpful directions.
  3. College module

Helpful Hints:

Adapt the number of colleges investigated depending on time restraints, computer space, and/or ability level of the student(s).

Activities:

  1. Students login using their User ID and Password.
  2. Students go to the College Search or College Directory in the College module. After completing the search, click Results.
  3. Students save at least 8-10 colleges that interest them to their Locker. The number may be adjusted due to time restraints and student ability levels.

Evaluation:

Guidance counselors can access the User Directory module of ECOS to check each student's locker for the required number of colleges saved.

Possible Adaptations:

Have students write a brief essay describing their experiences with the college search process so far.
