Approximate Time Needed:
Two to three day homework assignment (Can be done out-of-class).
Lesson Summary:
As a supplement to Gathering College/Career Information,
students will create a marketing-style presentation to
teach other students about the school or career.
Lesson Objective:
To give students the opportunity to present their findings after
gathering important information concerning college, universities, or
careers to interested clients, their classmates.
Materials and Resources:
- Pre-requisite: Students must complete
Gathering College/Career Information.
- Students' Locker
- College module
- Pen/Pencil and paper in order to save time with printing.
- College/Career Information Collection Worksheet
- College/Career Recruiting Flyer
Helpful Hints:
Depending on the popularity of certain schools, the counselor may
want to make sure that no school will be presented more than two or three
times.
The assignment can be applied to college-bound or career-oriented
students. The presentations could be done in the counseling center or back
in the classroom. The flyers should be displayed in a place of high
visibility after the presentation.
Activities:
- Counselor assigns students two of the colleges or trades researched
to complete the Gathering College/Career Information.
Students will use
the College/Career Information Collection Worksheet to complete the assignment.
- With the information gathered the students create a "College/Career
Fair" situation. Each student develops a flyer to teach another student
of a college, university, or career. Distribute the
College/Career Recruiting Flyer to students for
directions. Give two to three days to complete flyer.
- When the presentations are given, set up the classroom in two
concentric circles of desks facing one another for a "wheel discussion."
The students will present to one another for approximately 4-5 minutes
before rotating to the next seat. The counselor should time and
coordinate the movements. The inner circle of students will remain
stationary while the outer circle of students will rotate around the
circle.
Evaluation:
The flyer can be graded as a completed assignment or more rigidly
graded for thoroughness of data and presentation
skills.
Possible Adaptations:
Create a "College/Career Fair" environment in the Guidance Center with
the flyers submitted.
