Resume Fair

Approximate Time Needed:

Multi-Day Lesson

Lesson Summary:

Students will create business resumes and share them with the class.

Lesson Objective:

Students will learn to use effective writing to display their skills and abilities on a business resume. Students will also experience sharing their knowledge and interests with classmates while comparing and discussing the created resumes.

Materials and Resources:

  1. ECOS Profile
  2. ECOS Resume Writer
  3. Printer
  4. Resume stationery

Helpful Hints:

Teachers may want to use this lesson plan in conjunction with other ECOS lesson plans created to enhance career readiness skills, such as the Interview Your Job Candidates and Writing Letters for Interviews lessons.

Teachers may want to set-up the classroom to allow students room to roam and view resumes from several classmates.

Activities

  1. Discuss with students the ideas and components of a resume (i.e., contact information, education, job skills, experience, additional information).
  2. Share examples of resumes to have students determine which are effective and why. Ask students to determine how the use of language changes the effectiveness of the resume (i.e., active verbs, strong adjectives, etc.).
  3. Students will login to ECOS using their User ID and Password and go to the Profile section in the Portfolio module.
  4. Inform students that information entered into the ECOS Profile will automatically transfer into the Resume Writer section, so, the more details students enter into the Profile fields, the fewer things they will have to add in the Resume Writer portion.
  5. After students have completed the Profile section, have them go to the Resume Writer portion of the Portfolio. Students will see the information entered into the Profile in the text fields.
  6. Ask students to review the information to ensure its accuracy and encourage them to add any additional details or descriptions in the text boxes provided.
  7. Once a student has entered the desired resume information, have him/her save the information by clicking the Save button at the bottom of the Resume Writer screen.
  8. Student will then click the View Resume button and see the resume in its final version. (Note: students can choose between 3 resume styles—Contemporary, Professional, and Elegant—from the Resume Writer screen.)
  9. Students will print resumes on resume stationery.
  10. Completed resumes will be placed on tables/desks around the classroom for classmates to view.
  11. Students should view a minimum of 3 resumes at the fair.
  12. Ask students to give constructive criticism to their classmates whose resumes they viewed.
  13. Students will submit evaluations in writing including the following:
    • Name of student whose resume is being evaluated
    • Presence of resume components (including information discussed in step #1)
    • Consistency of form (including page set-up and use of verb tense)
    • Effectiveness of descriptive text
    • Suggestions or additional comments

Evaluation:

The teacher can login to ECOS as an administrator, go to the User Directory in the Manage module, and check individual student Profiles.

Additional assessments may include viewing a student’s completed and printed resume, as well as reading student feedback comments from the resumes viewed at the fair.

Possible Adaptations:

Use this lesson in collaboration with other classes of students to expose students to a variety of resumes.

At the fair, the teacher might want to include resumes from teachers at the school, and/or additional professionals from the community, for students to evaluate.
