Unit Plan: Creative Writing--the Short Story

Approximate Number of Classes Needed:  

6 (one for each major aspect of narrative: characterization, setting, tone, plot, and theme; one for peer-editing)

Unit Summary:  

Students will write a short story by synthesizing the five major elements of narrative.

Unit Objective:  

Students will develop web searching skills; develop a sense of a possible career path; utilize and articulate the five major aspects of narrative by understanding the role of both reader and writer; develop creative prose writing skills; and refine prose editing skills.

Materials and Resources:

  1. ECOS

Helpful Hints:  

Teachers will find it useful to first attempt to articulate the five major aspects of narrative by looking at literary works already discussed in class. This will provide students with a basis for creating their own original work.

  1. Lesson 1: Characterization
  2. Lesson 2: Setting
  3. Lesson 3: Tone
  4. Lesson 4: Plot
  5. Lesson 5: Theme
  6. Homework: Short Story Writing
  7. Lesson 6: Peer Editing
  8. Homework: Rewrite of Short Story

Evaluations: (four possibilities)  

One evaluation on final draft of short story.

One evaluation (in two parts) on each draft of story.

One final evaluation based on all eight activities of unit.

Eight separate evaluations based on each activity.

Possible Adaptations:  

After students have created their story, teacher may want to attempt the ECOS "When I Grow Up" Narrative Essay, as a way of building on good writing skills and of furthering research in a given career.
