Career Connection Game

Approximate Time Needed:

45-50 minutes

Lesson Summary:

Students will compare their perception of what they could be when they "grow up" with the tremendous possibilities of the real world. Hopefully, the significant difference in the number and scope between the students' expectations and search results will encourage them to broaden the level of curiosity in future explorations.

Lesson Objective:

While gaining more familiarity with the Education and Career Opportunities System™(ECOS), students will discover the wide variety of possibilities in the job market that correspond to their interests and beliefs.

Materials and Resources:

  1. Pre-requisite: Students must create an account and complete the Profile module of ECOS. The Guidance Counselor may access the User Directory or User Management module of the Counselor side of ECOS to check if this step has been completed.
  2. Career module.
  3. Exercises tool for helpful directions.
  4. Students need a pen/pencil and paper/notebook in order to save time with printing.

Helpful Hints:

If time and/or computer space is limited, student can work in groups of two or three. In the interest of time and effectiveness, Activities Step #1 should be done for homework or the day before going through the Career module.

Activities:

  1. Each student writes down careers in which he/she is interested.
  2. Students login to ECOS using their User ID and Password.
  3. Each student completes the questions in the Career Search of the Career module.
  4. After completing the search, click on Results.
  5. Each student compares the number of matching careers to the number of possible careers on their initial list.
  6. Ask each student to find the numerical difference between the Results list and his/her own list.
  7. Each student writes down the careers that appear on both lists. The students who match the most careers get a prize (e.g. candy, school notebook, High School game ticket, etc.).
  8. Each student writes down 5 occupations on his/her Results list that surprised him/her.
  9. Students share their findings orally with the class.
  10. Students save to their locker at least 8 careers that interest them.

Evaluation:

Guidance counselors can access the User Directory or User Management module of ECOS to check each student's locker for the required number of saved careers.

Possible Adaptations:

Students may use the Career Directory if they know a specific career that interests them already.
