Approximate Time Needed:
45 - 50 minutes.
Lesson Summary:
Students learn how their academic strengths and interests can translate
into majors at a college or university. The preliminary list of majors
initiates a deeper investigation into the fields of study and offers a
comfortable transition into a college search.
Lesson Objective:
Students will gain insight into the college majors by generating a list
that matches their interests and academic strengths.
Materials and Resources:
- Pre-requisite: Students must complete the Student
Profile and the Career module and have at least
eight careers saved to their Locker. The Guidance Counselor may
access the User Directory module of the Administrator side
of ECOS to check if this step has been completed.
- The Exercises tool for helpful directions.
- Major module
- Pen/Pencil and paper in order to save time with printer.
Helpful Hints:
Adapt the number of majors investigated depending on time restraints,
computer space, and/or ability level of the student(s).
In order to use time most effectively, the students could complete
Activities Steps #1-3 of the lesson for homework in the days
preceding the visit to the Guidance Counselor.
Activities Step #6 is an optional, but recommended, exercise for
students.
Activities:
- Students login using their User ID and Password and go
to the Major module where they will see the careers they have
selected.
- Students go to the Major Search or Major Directory
in the Major module.
- Students save 8-10 majors to their Locker.
- Students continue from Step #3 or login using their User ID
and Password and go to their Locker where the majors they
have selected have been saved. Students review the information given on
each of the majors in their Locker.
- Students write a one-page response explaining
which two majors intrigued them most.
- OPTIONAL:
Students go to the two majors which interested them
most. UnderRelated Majors, have student select two additional
majors. By going to the Major Directory, ask students to add
these two majors to their Locker.
Evaluation:
Guidance counselor collects the written assignment and accesses
the User Directory or User Management module to check each
student's Locker for the required number of majors saved.
Possible Adaptations:
Students return written responses to teacher responsible for
class.
